At UC Berkeley, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has overall managerial responsibility for Berkeley's research enterprise. The conduct of research is governed by rules and policies monitored by several jurisdictions - Federal and State governments, the UC Office of the President, the Academic Senates of both the UC system and the Berkeley campus, as well as the Vice Chancellor for Administration & Finance at Berkeley.
The VC Research office seeks to maintain an environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and community. Its specific goals are:
- Provide effective support for campuswide research efforts
- Advocate for research needs and resources
- Maximize the benefits of Berkeley's research to the scholarly community, and to the quality of life in the local community, the state, and the nation
Within the Research Administration field, there are four areas that assist with proper facilitation of all rules and policies:
- Academic Program Management
- Contracts and Grants
- Intellectual Property
- Research Compliance
