Tell us what you find most rewarding about working for UC Berkeley.
I enjoy getting to know members of the campus community. I've had the opportunity to work on a variety of administrative and IT projects across campus. I find the end result of an improved system or way of doing business to be the most rewarding aspect of working on campus. Serving on the Berkeley Staff Assembly Governing Council has also been very rewarding. And I love the energy of the students and the beauty of the campus landscape.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting their career at UC Berkeley?
My youngest son is a new employee. I encourage him to learn to use the many resources available to staff and to network in his field. We can benefit from helping and learning from each other, especially from those who are familiar with the campus organization and structure. As organizational changes occur it is important to stay informed and be involved.
What has been the most exciting project you've worked on here? What was the scope and audience it reached?
Five years ago, while working in Computer Operations & Information Services (COIS), I served on the cross-functional team that built the web interface for UC Ready , a business continuity planning tool. UC Ready is now used systemwide and nationally. UCB's team received UC's 2007 Larry L. Sautter Gold Award for Best IT Practices in Business Processes & Services and the Innovation Award from National Association of College & University Business Officers (NACUBO). I'm grateful that my efforts to bridge the technical and functional teams resulted in a tool used in disaster planning. My current project, CalTime (electronic timekeeping system) , is pretty exciting too!
What are you most looking forward to working on next?
I'd like to serve in a workforce learning development capacity. I'm very interested in the work COrWE is doing with preparing staff for new opportunities. I'd like to help with those kind of efforts. Working in elder care is another area of interest.
