I enjoy getting to know members of the campus community. I've had the opportunity to work on a variety of administrative and IT projects across campus. I find the end result of an improved system or way of doing business to be the most rewarding aspect of working on campus. Serving on the Berkeley Staff Assembly Governing Council has also been very rewarding. And I love the energy of the students and the beauty of the campus landscape.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting their career at UC Berkeley?

Michael Thompson

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting their career at UC Berkeley?

My advice would be to take responsibility for your career and strive to become an expert in your field, just as the faculty are experts in their fields. When I started my career, I only expected to work a couple of years to gain experience and then move on. However, over time I realized how much opportunity and support was here if I chose to take advantage of it.

Have a positive attitude toward the university. Work hard to contribute to our community and assume that everyone else is doing the same.

Working to create a community of graduate advising professionals that would have a productive and collaborative relationship with the Graduate Division.

Chief among the reasons that I find Berkeley such a great place to work is its combination of a unique academic environment, its great community of highly-talented professional staff, and the always brilliant and energetic student body. As someone who has held various student, staff, and teaching positions inside and outside of Berkeley, I have long admired the dynamic environment that exists on this campus.
