Ready to search and apply for jobs? Here are a few things you'll need to know to get started and to understand how the UC Berkeley recruiting process works.

Getting Started
When you're ready to search for a job, click on Go to Jobs. That will take you to our on-line recruitment system. There you'll be able to check out our job listings, select jobs that interest you, and apply for them by creating an online resume.

Pressed for time? Don't see anything you want to apply for right now? That's okay. You can set up your resume with us even if you don't want to apply for anything right now. You'll have an account with us, and you can come back any time you want to apply for a specific job. To set up an account, you'll need an email address.

Types of Jobs
UC Berkeley is a city within a city. We often have jobs available in almost any category — any type of job you can imagine, from custodian and police officer to research assistant and rocket scientist! And we usually have full-time, part-time, permanent, temporary and contract jobs available.

Searching the Job Listings
We make it easy for you to look for a job that fits your needs. You can search by any combination of the following categories:

  • Occupational category or categories that interest you (as many as you like at once)
  • Full- or Part-Time
  • Permanent or Temporary
  • By Keyword

Creating Your Resume. The first time you create your resume, you will be asked to provide your email address and a password. This information will become your account login. You will be able to come back any time, log in, search and apply for more jobs, change your resume, update your personal contact information, and track the progress of your applications.

Help When You Need It. Our system is simple to use, with instructions on every page. Please click here for detailed step-by-step instructions.

Important Application Tips!
Attaching Your Resume. When you apply for a job, our system will ask you if you prefer to attach your resume, cut and paste the text of it into a resume text field, or manually enter your job and education history in the appropriate pages. If you select "attach resume," our system will attach your resume to your online resume pages, and automatically enter some of the information from it in the appropriate fields. You'll need to check any information that appears automatically, to be sure that it is correct.

CAUTION: Many resume formats don't work well for attaching in online systems. To be sure that your resume attaches successfully, please do not use any special fonts, bold, underlines, bullets, etc. For best results, please click here to see the suggested resume format.

Tailoring Your Resume. You can tailor your resume for specific jobs, because you can create as many versions of your resume as you like in our system. However, if you are going to create more than one version, be sure to wait 24 hours to change the latest version. The last resume you enter in a day will be the one the system uses as your application for all the jobs you applied for in that day.

What do "Closing date" and "Review begins" mean?
Closing date: When a job posting indicates that there is a closing date, it means that the department has set a final deadline for applications. Applications that come in after that deadline are not processed. When you apply for a job with a closing date, be sure to apply online by the deadline.

Review begins (date): This is the date the department begins to review applications. A job listed with a "review begins" date does not have a final deadline for applications -- the recruitment period remains open until the job is filled or withdrawn. You can still apply for a job whose "review begins" date has passed. However, because applications submitted after the "review begins" date miss being part of the initial pool of applicants, consideration for the position after that date is not guaranteed, and occurs on a first-come, first-served basis. The department may make a hire at any time after the first review date, whether from the initial pool of applications or from those received subsequently.

It makes sense to apply for all jobs, regardless of type, as early as possible. However, as long as a recruitment period is officially open you may apply online.

What Happens Next
We will automatically send you an email when your application is received. You will also get an email when we make a decision to interview you, or any time you are not selected. You will be able to log in to your account to find out about your application and to track your progress.

In general, here's what happens when you apply for a job at Berkeley. Departments begin reviewing applications on the "First Review Date" or on the date that the job closes. The close date is listed in the job description. The departments decide which candidates to interview, and then arrange for the interviews. Interviews can range from a panel interview, after which a final decision is made, to a series of interviews with fewer and fewer interviewers. The exact interview process depends upon the department you apply to and the type of job you're applying for.

Because every department has its own timeline and process, it may take a few weeks to find out whether you have been selected for interview. In the meantime, if you are not selected for an interview we will send you an email informing you of that decision. In addition, you can check your progress by logging into your account.

Following Up
We'll keep you updated — if something has happened regarding your application, you'll hear by email and/or the new status will be posted on your Application Status Page. If it has been longer than 4 weeks since you applied and you wish to follow up on the status of a job, you may contact the Employment Office at (510) 642-4621 or email admail@berkeley.edu.
